What to Wear at Football Trials: Tips from UEFA Pro Coach Anthony Williams

When it comes to football trials, preparation is key — and that includes what you wear. According to Anthony Williams, UEFA Pro Licence coach and Director of Football at UK Football Trials, turning up in the right kit can help boost your confidence and ensure you perform at your best.

“Confidence starts with being prepared – dress like you’re ready to play,” says Anthony. “It sounds simple, but showing up properly equipped shows scouts that you take the opportunity seriously.”

Essential Kit for a Football Trial

  1. Football Boots for the Right Surface

First and foremost, make sure your boots match the pitch type. “You need boots suited to the playing surface — firm ground, 3G, 4G, or astro turf,” says Anthony. “Wearing the wrong footwear can affect your touch, balance, and overall performance.”

If you’re unsure what surface you’ll be playing on, check with the organiser beforehand or bring two pairs to be safe.

  1. Shin Pads – Always Required

This is non-negotiable. “Shin pads are always required at trials,” Anthony emphasises. “You won’t be allowed to play without them, and turning up unprepared could cost you your chance.”

  1. Comfortable Football Kit

Wear a proper football kit — top, shorts, socks — that allows you to move freely. “Choose kit that you’re comfortable in and used to training in,” says Anthony. “Avoid anything brand new that might cause discomfort or restrict movement.”

Make sure your kit is clean, presentable, and in good condition. First impressions count.

  1. Be Ready for All Weather

“Always bring weather-ready gear,” Anthony advises. “A waterproof jacket, spare clothes, and a towel can make a big difference, especially if you’re playing outdoors.”

Staying dry and warm before and after your trial helps maintain focus and avoids any unnecessary distractions.

Look the Part, Play the Part

Turning up to a trial with the right kit shows professionalism, commitment, and attention to detail — traits every scout values. “It’s not about flashy boots or the latest shirt,” says Anthony. “It’s about wearing what helps you perform your best.”

So, dress smart, pack for the weather, and step onto the pitch like you belong there.
