If you’re passionate about football and want to turn that passion into a career, becoming a coach is a rewarding path. But what qualifications do you need? According to Anthony Williams — UEFA Pro Licence holder and Director of Football at UK Football Trials — the journey is structured, challenging, and filled with opportunity.
“In most countries, especially across Europe, coaching follows a clear, tiered qualification system,” explains Anthony. “Each step prepares you for a different level of the game — from grassroots to the elite.”
The Football Coaching Ladder
- FA Level 1 & 2 (UK)
These are the starting points for anyone looking to coach in grassroots or youth settings. “Level 1 gives you the basics — how to run a safe, fun session. Level 2 digs deeper into technical development and player understanding,” Anthony says.
These qualifications include training in safeguarding, first aid, and how to plan and deliver coaching sessions.
- UEFA B Licence
This is where coaching becomes more serious. “UEFA B is often a requirement for working in academies,” Anthony shares. “You learn about tactical systems, position-specific training, and how to coach within a club structure.”
It’s ideal for those looking to coach talented youth players or semi-professional teams.
- UEFA A Licence
“This is a high-level coaching badge,” Anthony explains. “It’s for those working with senior players and managing complex teams and match strategies.”
A UEFA A Licence focuses heavily on match analysis, team management, and developing a coaching philosophy.
- UEFA Pro Licence
The highest qualification available in European football, this licence is required to manage top-tier professional clubs. “It’s where you learn to deal with the pressure, media, high-level strategy, and man-management,” says Anthony, who himself holds this elite badge.
“It’s demanding, but it prepares you for the top level of the game.”
More Than Just Tactics
Modern coaching courses cover more than just tactics and drills. “You’ll study psychology, physical training, communication, and the mental side of the game,” Anthony adds. “It’s a complete education — you’re shaping people, not just players.”
Ready to Start Your Coaching Journey?
Whether you’re just beginning or looking to climb higher, each qualification builds your knowledge, confidence, and credibility. “The learning never stops,” says Anthony. “That’s what makes coaching so exciting.”
